What We Do

University of Kansas Cancer Center, Research Building

Strategically Uniting Education and Patient Care to Advance Cancer Research

The new research and patient care building for The University of Kansas Cancer Center is positioned to become a global destination for comprehensive cancer care and innovation. Supporting the center’s prestigious NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation—one of fewer than 60 nationwide—the facility will create a state-of-the-art environment for advancing cancer research.

Location: Kansas City, KS
Size:  218,672 SF
Status: Under Construction

The team of HDR and Helix is designing the six-story research facility for the University of Kansas Medical Center with a focus on flexible, purpose-built spaces that empower interdisciplinary research teams. Each floor is organized around a central lab zone, surrounded by open work areas to encourage transparency and connection. Shared amenities—including break areas and conference rooms are integrated to foster collaboration.

Once complete, the research center will be strategically linked to The University of Kansas Health System patient care facility to support a “bench to bedside” relationship between research and patient care. The facility will enhance the region’s only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, attract world-class talent, and serve as a catalyst for breakthrough therapies and innovation for decades to come.
