Helix Architecture + Design Headquarters
Balancing historic preservation and modern design for creative collaboration
Helix Architecture + Design’s new headquarters is located within two connected historic buildings in Kansas City’s Film Row district. Once used for film storage and left vacant for years, the buildings were preserved by developer and philanthropist, Shirley Bush Helzberg, with Helix leading architecture and design. Helix thoughtfully preserved the charm of the original Film Row structures while transforming the two buildings into a vibrant workplace in the Crossroads Arts District.

Neutral materials, such as warm wood and white painted brick, allow elements of the design process to activate the space. The layout supports collaboration, with open workstations, pin-up walls, touchdown areas, and a fully equipped makerspace. Designers are encouraged to move about the office, grab their team for an impromptu charrette, and utilize any tools they need to bring the design process out of the computer. Aspirational design publications strewn on high-top tables and a record player spinning favorite albums offer opportunities for inspiration.
Materials were reused where possible, and new materials were chosen for their durability and timelessness, creating an adaptable environment. Additionally, furniture and materials from Helix’s previous office were donated and re-homed to minimize waste and support community organizations. LEED and WELL strategies were used throughout the building, with ample natural light being brought into the space through updated large windows.
